Those, like Bernanke, who have proposals for improving the economy have to address this issue of excessive debt. If they do not do so, they are just mouthing meaningless words. Ultimately, the policy proposals we have seen simply add to debt on the government’s side of the ledger without doing anything to deal with excessive debt on the private side.
